It was reported by NDTV in India that the Indian Cabinet is urgently reviewing airport security across the country and that the Ministry of
Home Affairs has confirmed that it wants additional steps taken to
counter the heightened threats.

Aviation ministry officials confirmed to NDTV that they are working on a new set of security
proposals to meet the sophisticated challenges of the future.

Enhance airport security

•   Use of state-of-the-art screening equipment
•   Use of hi-tech explosive detection devices
•   A dedicated Aviation Security Force to gradually replace CISF
•   Bureau of Civil Aviation Security to strengthen their staff levels

With a massive modernisation and expansion programme of existing airports that are currently underway in India together with the planned
construction of 35 new airports across the country, the airport
security equipment market is set to rapidly expand.

Research shows that screening and surveillance equipment was already
high on the list of priorities but body scanners are now seen as a
“must have” for all international airports in India of which there are
more than 20.

In addition to the well publicised threats posed by cross-border
terrorists such as those involved in last year's Mumbai attack, that
killed 170 people, India faces many internal challenges, not least of
which is an anti-insurgency war against Maoist terrorist groups
fighting in 223 districts across the North Eastern region of the
country.

Since 1997 according to research by Frost & Sullivan, more than 21
per cent of all terrorist attacks in India have been directed against
mass transportation targets, so even before recent events, India was
already scheduled to dramatically increase the budget for airport
security.

With major events looming like the Commonwealth Games, when the eyes of
the world will be on India and the many thousands of international
visitors expected who will pass through India's airports, the Christmas
day attempt will only serve to boost still further the budget for
airport security.
